Destinations - Excursions
Fiesole:
At the hearth of Fiesole you find Piazza Mino where you can visit the impressive Roman Cathedral, Palazzo Altoviti (seat of the seminary) and the Town hall. On the other side of the square, at the top of an hill from where you can enjoy a wonderful view on Florence, you can find San Francesco’s Church.
Near Piazza Mino, northbound, you can find the Roman Theatre. Fiesole is one of the most antique cities of Tuscany, with an important archaeological site: the Roman Amphitheatre, still in good conditions, the remaining of a necropolis, the roman bath and many other buildings from the late imperial age. During the summer a theatre and music festival- the “Estate Fiesolana” - takes place in the Roman theatre.
Just a few steps away from the Roman Theatre, you can visit the Archaeological Museum, with all the Archaeological findings dating from the Etruscan and Roman age to the middle age, and the Museum Bandini, which contains an important ceramic collection from the brothers Della Robbia.
For those who are more interested in modern art, it is possible to visit the collection of the Primo Conti Museum in the 1400 Villa Le Coste.
Surroundings:
Fiesole is situated on a hill, just above Florence and only 7km far from it. Reaching Florence historical Centre is very easy thanks to an efficient bus connection: bus 7 leaves every 10/15 minutes (from 06:00 am until midnight) for the Piazza S. Marco, from where you can reach by feet the most important historical and artistic attractions of the town.
You can visit the Cathedral of Florence, Piazza S. Croce, Piazza S. Maria Novella or the Ponte Vecchio. You can also simply take a walk around the market of San Lorenzo or go shopping in the Via Tornabuoni.
From the main train station of Florence- stazione Centrale Santa Maria Novella - you can reach the most interesting cities in the surrounding area: towns like Pisa, Siena and S. Gimignano can be reached by train or by bus.
At the end of every excursion you can come back the quiet and relaxing atmosphere of Fiesole.
