Fiesole between history, archeology and art

Fiesole, Firenze

Fiesole between history, archeology and art

Less than 10 km from Florence, the beauty of Fiesole embraces centuries and centuries of history in a context of timeless charm and extraordinarily well preserved.

This small Tuscan town is waiting to be discovered because it offers a lot of unique and interesting features: the imposing and ancient Etruscan walls, the remains of the Roman baths, the top of the hill where Leonardo da Vinci put into practice his experiments on the flight and the Roman amphitheater, still used today as a stage for events and concerts of the Estate Fiesolana.

The historic center of Fiesole is part of Tuscan history, offers churches and parks where you can spend time away from the more chaotic city of Florence.

Fiesole was an Etruscan fortress very well established in the 8th century BC, until the Romans managed – after various attempts – to dominate the community and to build a thriving city on the remains of what preceded them.

For centuries it was a bitter enemy and rival of Florence until, once again, it was subdued and the nobles who ruled it were forced to move their residences within the walls of the victorious city.

During the 14th century, it became famous as the home of the rich and famous Florentines, who found the perfect setting here to build their new and luxurious villas in the midst of rows of cypress trees and spectacular gardens.

The hill stands 295 meters above Florence, offering a breathtaking and exclusive view of the Renaissance city par excellence.

Fiesole is well suited to spend an afternoon exploring its historical museums, gardens and villas, the picturesque streets of the center, the churches with a simple but suggestive profile, the paths in the middle of the green and the parks.

After having discovered its historical and archaeological secrets, you can take advantage of the numerous bars, restaurants and pizzerias, to taste local specialties surrounded by a truly unique context.
